Q&A

What if my child does not speak Mandarin ?

At Stream Montessori, we embrace children of all language backgrounds, regardless of whether they speak Mandarin or not. Our language program benefits both native and non-native speakers in various ways.

For native speakers, our program provides an opportunity to refine their language skills, boost self-esteem, and develop leadership qualities. Witnessing their non-native peers engaging with and learning Mandarin often sparks enthusiasm and a deeper appreciation for the language.

Non-native speakers, on the other hand, gain valuable exposure to new sounds and meanings during a critical developmental period for language acquisition. Early immersion in a new language contributes to the development of a wide range of skills, expanding a child's horizons in various ways.

We firmly believe diversity enriches our learning community, and every child brings unique strengths and perspectives. Our program celebrates the diversity of languages and cultures, fostering a sense of inclusivity and respect among all students.

Be assured that, irrespective of your child's proficiency in Mandarin, they will be warmly welcomed and supported in their language learning journey at Stream Montessori.

What if my child already speaks other languages ? Will my child be confused with the introduction of Mandarin?

If your child is already proficient in other languages, introducing Mandarin into our program will not result in confusion. In fact, research indicates that multilingual children often have an advantage when it comes to learning additional languages.

Children who are exposed to multiple languages already possess a subset of sounds within their language repertoire and are familiar with code-switching. Code-switching is the ability to switch between languages based on the situation and the person they are communicating with. These children enter our program with skills that prepare them well for acquiring new languages.

Moreover, multilingual children are developing metalinguistic awareness, meaning they understand the patterns and structures of language. This awareness makes it easier for them to grasp new languages.

We actively encourage families to continue conversing with their children in other languages. Learning multiple languages at a young age builds a reservoir of skills that can be valuable in various ways, both in the short and long term. Studies have demonstrated that individuals who know multiple languages tend to have greater neurological "reserves," which can be advantageous if ever needed.

Please be assured that introducing Mandarin alongside other languages will not lead to confusion. On the contrary, it will enhance your child's linguistic abilities and expand their cognitive capabilities.

What if I am not familiar with the Mandarin and may feel uncertain about, how to support my child's language development at home?

We recognize that parents may have apprehensions about language learning at home, especially if they are unfamiliar with the language being taught. In response, our school provides supplementary resources such as songs, poems, and class materials that parents can explore if they are interested and comfortable doing so.

However, it's crucial to emphasize that language learning should be an enjoyable and stress-free experience for both children and parents. There is no obligation for children or their parents to practice the language at home if they are unfamiliar with it or feel uneasy doing so.

We highly value open communication and encourage parents to express any concerns or questions regarding their child's language development. Our teachers are readily available to offer guidance, suggestions, and support. Our goal is to ensure that your child's language journey receives support both at school and within the home environment.

It's important to keep in mind that the primary setting for your child's language learning is at school. Our program is specifically designed to facilitate their balanced development in both English and Mandarin. We aim to alleviate any pressure or uncertainty you may feel and want to assure you that active involvement in Mandarin practice at home is entirely optional for your child's success in our bilingual program.

What if my child will become stronger in one language while neglecting the other?

It's common for children to develop language skills at varying rates, and we understand the concern regarding one language potentially overshadowing the other. In our program, our teachers closely monitor each child's progress and customize instruction to cater to their individual language needs. This approach ensures that children receive balanced support and challenges in both English and Chinese, promoting proficiency in both languages.

Furthermore, our immersive environment and daily interactions in both languages offer abundant opportunities for children to practice and enhance their skills in both English and Chinese. We cultivate a language-rich atmosphere where children feel at ease and motivated to actively use both languages.

Please be assured that our objective is to assist children in becoming confident and proficient bilingual speakers who can adeptly navigate and succeed in both English and Chinese-speaking environments. We are committed to fostering balanced language development, supporting your child's growth in both languages throughout their journey at our school.

What if my child mix up grammar rules, vocabulary, or pronunciation between English and Chinese?

Your concern is valid, and we recognize that English and Chinese are distinct languages with unique grammar rules, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Our school is proactive in addressing this by providing explicit instruction in both languages.

Our teachers are well-aware of the unique nature of English and Chinese, and they ensure that students receive focused and tailored instruction in each language. We design specific practice activities that target the grammar rules, vocabulary, and pronunciation of both English and Chinese. By emphasizing the differences between the two languages, we aim to help students build a strong foundation in each language independently.

In addition to this targeted instruction, we create a language-rich environment that exposes students to authentic language use in both English and Chinese. Through various activities, conversations, and resources, students have ample opportunities to engage with and practice each language separately. This exposure is crucial in fostering a clear understanding of the distinct grammar rules, vocabulary, and pronunciation of both English and Chinese.
